Blom&Moors and three other design offices were invited by the municipality of Maastricht to develop a concept for the public space of the Sphinxkwartier in Maastricht.

Starting point of the concept of Blom&Moors/OSLO is the public space as the catalyst of the urban development. The public interior design anticipates the commissioning of the former industrial buildings. It is a vital link: the welcoming public space invites entrepreneurs, institutions, organizations and residents from getting together, starting initiatives and to generate a new dynamic in the region. An exciting mix of features and lifestyles, polished and unpolished.

The interplay between generous sizes and fine grained structures, voluminous shapes and refined details ensures cohesion within which small finds and surprises unfold. Material own colors of concrete, steel and wood meet bold art and design. The concrete Sphinxvloer is the connecting element. The floor is executed in concrete with a random pattern of cuts. Traces of old and young history may remain visible. Monumental solitary trees and rows of trees offer peace. Wall-mounted luminaires to the industrial facades enlighten the walking routes while the historical lanterns will be applied at the Boschstraat. We propose to develop a Sphinxstyle for signing and signage, inspired by the bold letters on the Sphinxgebouw and the stamps on the pottery. As long as the outdoor space has a flexible character, the furniture will be flexible and portable too.

The principles mentioned above have been worked out to each of the five areas. These areas gradually find their form and use. Boschstraat and tram stop, Eiffelcour and sleephelling Bassin/Timmerfabriek with crossing Bassin will have their permanent design from the start, while Petrus Regoutplein and Frontensingel allow experiment.
