Vision
In the Netherlands there are no identical railway stations. The architecture of railwaystations can be special and therefore the smaller buildings on the railway platform have to be modest to add to the diversity of architectural styles. During the development of the waiting room and retail point the greatest possible consistency and serenity was pursued in the architectural concept.

Important principles for both pavilions were the greatest possible transparency of the buildings and comfort for travelers. 'Experience outside what happens inside' was the guiding principle so that travelers have an optimal view on each other, the train, the environment and the goods on disply at the retail point.

The design of the retail point asked for a special approach for no mechanical installation or product displays should be visible from the outside.
The skirting, a modest use of materials and fine detailing give the design it’s refinement.

Pilot Leiden Centraal station
The designs for the two virtually identical pavilions, a waiting room and a retail point, were tested at Leiden Central station. The structural principle of the pilot design was developed in collaboration with cepezed architects. By applying load-bearing glass the pavilions had maximum transparency and few columns. For the waiting area is a large round light object was designed to enhance the visibility at night. On the glass walls special designed signs were added serving visually impaired.

Hoevelaken station
After the pilot phase, the designs were produced in a larger series (1st tranche). The combination OFN / Epsilon / Fabrique was responsible for the execution. Some details have been changed. The load-bearing glass has been replaced by a structure of glass with slender steel columns. The signing on the glass wall has been changed into a rhythm of pill-shaped white stripes. Characteristic design principles as the skirting, the combination of glass-steel, the seamless floor surface and recessed lighting are maintained in the design. On Hoevelaken station, the first air-conditioned waiting rooms with comfortable wooden benches were placed.

Rotterdam Central station
Also in Rotterdam station the new waiting areas are intoduced. Meanwhile, the concept for the retail points, a collaboration NS Stations and Fabrique, were developed into a modular series of retail points in different sizes with room for special objects like a toilet or retail dispenser.
